Peratech

vendredi, 28 novembre 2008

Materials development specialist Peratech was created in 1996 to exploit the discovery of quantum tunnelling composites (QTCs). These extraordinary materials (polymers containing tiny metal particles) have the capacity to transform from virtually perfect insulators into metal-like conductors purely from being deformed by compression, twisting or stretching.

Peratech had developed a printable ink version of QTCs, but only using screen printing methods. Unfortunately, there were quality issues which hindered their successful commercial exploitation. Peratech was put in contact with the Digital Print CIC via KnowledgeRICH – a free enquiry service providing a single point of contact that connects businesses with the wealth of expertise and knowledge available through the region’s universities.

Stage one of the Digital Print CIC’s involvement was to give the company a scientific understanding of the existing printing method in order to help refine the process, solve the quality control issues and secure existing markets.

Stage two is the ongoing development of QTCs into an ink-jettable format. This printing process is less expensive, creates less waste, brings less pressure to bear on the material and allows for far greater placement precision. This printing method also opens up a whole range of possibilities for fresh commercial applications in new markets, such as textiles. Until now, incorporating QTC technology into clothing materials had used textile coating processes. With confidence in the new printing methods, Peratech has invested in a local textile development company to bring products to a wider audience. The company’s first such product was a snow jacket with integrated iPod controls.

Collaboration with the Digital Print CIC continues as Peratech investigates future commercial applications. This includes using QTCs to interface with electronic equipment in the car, aeroplane, medical, toy and sports fields, robotic arms, touch-sensitive paper and heat, and vapour-sensitive clothing. The successful collaboration has lead to the creation of additional jobs, with further recruitment planned for both the UK and overseas.

Benefits of Peratec’s collaboration with the Digital Print CIC:
  • Quality control achieved
  • Creation of 15 jobs
  • Creating a new market through a superior process
  • Consolidating existing markets
