"The project partners considered a number of potential locations for this renewable energy investment - Saltend, Hull emerged as the preferred site due to a combination of existing infrastructure and utilities, available land and skilled workforce." Development and Communications Manager, Dr Malcolm Joslin, BP.

As Europe's largest producer of acetic acid, BP's Saltend site near Hull plays a hugely important role in the production of a range of chemicals for use in industry. Housing a workforce of around 600 staff, Saltend is also recognised as a global centre for Research and Technology, supporting existing sites in the UK as well as in countries such as the USA, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and China.

As a global operation which is listed as one of the 5 biggest companies in the entire world, BP continues to invest heavily in the Saltend site which has recently been selected as the location for a major investment in biofuels production. Approximately £400m will be spent on the construction of a world scale bioethanol plant alongside a high technology demonstration plant, designed to advance development work on the next generation of biofuels. Operating as a Joint Venture with BP, DuPont and Associated British Foods as partners, the investment will bring with it around 70 new full-time posts in addition to employment opportunities generated by the construction phase. It is also in line with the UK Government’s commitment to adopting renewable energy sources.

BP are also big players in the area of Enterprise, having created Sirius in 1999 with a grant of £1 million. The registered Enterprise Agency has succeeded in encouraging economic development around the Saltend site through the provision of comprehensive business support services, including loans and leverage and has been responsible for creating over 130 businesses and around 750 jobs through financial support in addition to a further 850 jobs via quality advice.
