Hull developing new oil degree

The University of Hull will be assisted by a BP executive to develop a new foundation degree for workers in the refinery and petrochemical industry.
The project is a part of £2.9m Working Higher initiative, which aims to create work-based degrees in five areas.
Hull University is taking the lead in developing course content for the refining and petrochemicals foundation degree.
Gareth James, from North Ferriby, who has a 30-year career in senior operational roles with BP, has been appointed to bridge the gap between academia and industry in the development of the new oil degree.
He said: "The foundation degrees offer a work-based career path, making them ideal for developing people into roles on the 'earn and learn' principle, and for upskilling and reskilling more experienced staff as part of the a business's workforce development strategy."
Mr James, a former board member for the Cogent Sector Skills Council, called upon more employers to come forward and help them "to develop the qualifications that will underpin a world class workforce across the UK's refining and petrochemicals sector".
He continued: "The Working Higher initiative offers dedicated resources to get this right for the sector and a real opportunity to be part of an innovative approach to meeting the wider workforce needs now and for the future."
