An eco-research project has been unveiled in Leeds, which it hopes will help other cities reach their sustainability targets.
The £1 million project is aimed at providing the tools for planners to make eco-friendly decisions.
Professor William Gale of the School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering at Leeds University revealed: "Traditionally planners were concerned with issues such as the appropriateness of proposed buildings and transport infrastructure."
He added that cities play a crucial role in both energy sustainability and economic competitiveness, emphasising the need for them to be accommodated in the long term.
Colleagues from the University of Nottingham will also be involved in the project, which is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Academics from a range of sectors will also be on hand to ensure it is successful.
Meanwhile, engineers at the university's design department are looking for ways to revolutionise the computer-aided design process.
