Wakefield improves recycling rate
vendredi, 12 juin 2009
Improvements to Wakefield's environmental systems have helped it to achieve a recycling rate of 35 per cent so far this year.
Wakefield City Council has established itself as one of the best recyclers in the region - a feat heralded as a "massive step forward" by the authority.
The government has set a national target for councils to recycle 40 per cent of all waste by 2010.
Wakefield council officials estimate that around 70 per cent of what is thrown away can be used again.
Cabinet member for the environment Clive Hudson explained that the improvements to recycling habits have been "really simple".
He said: "We encourage residents to reduce, re-use and recycle waste as much as possible - by doing this it reduces the amount of waste we produce, saves everyone money and protects the environment.
"Wakefield has so much to offer and I'm a strong believer that if we all work together ... we can strengthen the area as a beautiful place to live, work and visit."
The announcement comes after a new eco-friendly system was installed in a Wakefield Council-funded sports pavilion intended to improve water usage.
